Top tips for turning your research into an eye-catching poster

Having trouble designing a scientific poster?  We understand that your poster will represent many months, or even years of hard work and translating this research into a poster format can be challenging.

Here are some of the design principles we follow:

  • Avoid overloading the reader with too much information. Less is always more!  Determine where heavy content can be edited down to either a bulleted list or callout statement

  • Graphs, tables and other visuals are key to communicate your data.  Can graphs be consolidated or better articulated using other formats and techniques?

  • Could the use of infographics make a difference to simplify a complex message?  Using contrast and typographic varieties in a minimalistic way to better serve the content and understanding of the data

  • A limited and well chosen colour palette against a white background gives more impact, meaning and functionality.  A riot of colour is much harder for the eye to navigate

  • Content distributed into columns, with text aligned to the left encourages the reader to read! Central alignment is really tricky to read and digest, especially for longer lines of text

  • Graphics and typography can be viewed clearly from a comfortable distance, or if reading from a tablet

  • Compliant - We understand the sensitivity of the data and the importance of a non-commercial presentation
